Workshop Overview
The Southwestern Pond Turtle (Actinemys pallida) is a distinctive freshwater species found only in southwestern California and northwestern Baja California. This small turtle is listed as a Species of Special Concern in California and is currently a candidate for Federal Threatened status in the United States. In Mexico, it is federally listed as Threatened, highlighting the urgent need for more knowledge to support the effective conservation and management of its remaining populations.
This hands-on workshop offers a unique opportunity to locate and study this fascinating species in its natural habitat. Participants will receive in-field instruction from experts of this species, Jeff Alvarez and Jorge Valdez, covering the species' natural history, habitat requirements, and relevant conservation legislation. The workshop includes practical training on trapping, handling, measuring, and marking techniques, essential skills for field-based turtle research and monitoring.
